Reduce Packaging Waste and Sort Correctly

Ekomodulaatio

Packaging plays an important role in protecting and transporting products, but everyone can influence the amount of packaging waste generated and how efficiently materials are recycled and kept in circulation through their own choices.

Prevent the Generation of Packaging Waste

Choose purpose-designed packaging that uses only the amount of packaging material needed to protect and transport the product. It is also a good idea to reuse packaging whenever possible.

Consumers can reduce packaging waste, for example, by:

    • using a reusable shopping bag instead of a single-use plastic bag
    • choosing refillable packaging when available
    • using a washable reusable plastic cup or regular ceramic and glass tableware instead of disposable cups
    • reusing packaging for its original purpose or for storage

Reusable Packaging

Some packaging is designed to be used multiple times. The aim of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is to increase the use of reusable packaging where it is environmentally appropriate. In Finland, there are still relatively few reusable packaging solutions available for consumers, but gas cylinders are a familiar example of reusable consumer packaging.

If packaging is intended for reuse, it should be returned empty in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer or service provider.

Sort Packaging Correctly

Consumers play an important role in the recycling of packaging materials. Correct sorting is essential for ensuring that valuable raw materials can be efficiently returned to circulation.

Remember the following:

  • use the packaging until it is empty
  • sort the packaging according to its material type (cardboard, glass, metal, plastic, or wood)
  • follow the sorting instructions

Note! Even empty packaging that has contained hazardous substances must be handled according to specific instructions, as any residues may create hazardous situations at recycling facilities.

Packaging Labels Help with Sorting

Packaging may contain a variety of material markings and sorting instructions. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation is gradually introducing harmonised packaging labels with standardised symbols and colours across the EU. Their purpose is to make correct sorting and recycling of packaging easier.

While waiting for this, remember this simple rule: Is it packaging? => Sort it into the recycling container for the packaging’s main material.

Do Not Leave Packaging in Nature

When packaging ends up in nature, it causes harm to the environment, animals, and people. In particular, single-use plastic packaging and plastic bags can remain in the environment for a long time and break down into microplastics.

Some compostable packaging is designed for industrial composting and is therefore not suitable for home composting. It must not be discarded in nature either.

All used packaging should be sorted appropriately or disposed of as mixed waste if no separate collection system is available.
