Packaging statistics
The Pirkanmaa ELY Centre compiles the official packaging statistics for Finland from the data reported by Rinki and other organisations and submits the data to the EU Commission. It also publishes the packaging statistics on its website. Rinki publishes the actual recycling and reuse rates on channels such as its website after receiving the official statistics from the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre.
Here you can find packaging recycling statistics as well as packaging reuse statistics.
Packaging recycling statistics
Recycling means using waste materials as raw material to manufacture new products. For example, corrugated cardboard boxes or carton packaging can be turned into paper roll cores, or beverage cans into new beverage cans.
Recycling rate (target)
Please note:
- The recycling target rate for each year, based on national legislation, is given in brackets (including non-deposit packaging and deposit packaging).
- Target rates for 2016-2019 have been set for deposit packaging and non-deposit packaging separately. Therefore, there are no material-specific total target rates.
- From 2020 onwards, the method of calculating the recycling rate changed as follows 1) An estimate of all packaging waste outside the statistics is also added to the amount of packaging waste from which the recycling rate is calculated 2) In sorting facilities, materials classified as unsuitable for recycling (rejects) are no longer included in the amount of recycled material.
Packaging reuse statistics
Reuse means using packaging (not waste) again for its original purpose. Examples include beverage bottles, plastic and cardboard boxes, roller cages and wooden pallets reused as packaging.
The figures in the table show the reuse rate (%).
Reuse rate = the amount of refilled packaging divided by the amount of total use of packaging.
Total use of packaging = one-way packaging + refilled packaging.
